How to Make Your Expert Business Fun, Not Work

man-relaxing-on-the-sofaOwning your own business is truly a romantic notion – flowing income, freedom to do what you want when you want, and working in a field that you love.

As they say, if you love what you do, you'll never work another day in your life.

But the reality for many business owners and entrepreneurs is that it can be grueling, stressful, and eat up more hours of your life than if you just had a “regular job.”

And that sounds an awful lot like work, doesn't it?

This can be especially true for consultants, coaches, and speakers, because your service is dependent on your direct participation – sessions that last a certain amount of time with one customer or audience. Which means you're always stuck trading time for money.

So let's say you get your business going strong, and you've booked 30 clients a week… that's 30 hours devoted to the work that you love.

But then you also have to devote time to marketing, invoices, creating content, follow-ups, etc…

And since those areas aren't your expertise, it might take another 20 hours or more to get everything done.

Suddenly that 30 hour work week becomes 50 hours. Or more.

You'll find yourself having less time to go on vacations, spend time with your family, or just relax.

This is where stress starts to seep in. And where a lot of people give up on their dreams, because it's not the easy life they thought it would be.

Well, I'm here to tell you that it doesn't have to be that way.

You can have the elusive “4 hour work week” of your dreams. (Well more likely 16 hour work week) You can go on the beautiful month-long vacations with your family, go to your children's away games, and be able to go to that afternoon yoga class you love so much…

It's possible to enjoy a 6 figure income (and beyond) with just some simple changes to how you design and run your business…

The true lifestyle of the online business owner can be yours.

But you have to work smart.

The Steps to Freedom

Think for a minute about how you run your business. What work are you doing, and what work are you best at?

Chances are that you are doing everything to run your business, and by doing so you are being completely inefficient.

You can make websites for free, so why pay an expensive web designer to put together your website?

You know how to type, so why ask someone to write your articles for you?

Every entrepreneur on the planet who is working way too hard is guilty of this – you want to be in charge of everything. And actually find it difficult to relinquish control of anything, because you don't believe people will live up to your standards.

You need to get over it.

If you want to live the lifestyle I mentioned above, you need to start delegating. If you don't know how to build a website, don't. Find someone who does and pay them to do it. It doesn't have to be fancy and it doesn’t have to cost a lot. With outsourcing sites like odesk, Elance and 99 designs to name a few, outsourcing this type of work is easy and cheap to do.

The same goes for every other aspect of our expert business. Write down your weekly and monthly goals and tasks. Figure out which of those have to be done by a human being, and delegate everything that isn't your expertise to other people.

In fact, the only 2 things you should ever be focusing on are your service (which is your expertise) and marketing (which I can teach you how to improve and systemize, so you don't have to do every little thing again and again).

Maximize Your Efficiency

Here's a notion that may be foreign to you – would you rather help one person at a time? Or 100 people?

Coaching, in particular, seems like it has to be a one-on-one service. And some customers may prefer it that way.

However, there are ways to maximize the number of people you reach with your effort.

For example, you could have a coaching call with 10 or 20 people on the line. And then you can record that call, and make it available to both the people who were on the call and people who sign up for your membership service.

When you give a speech (which you should be doing for visibility), record it. Put the video in that same membership area. Or perhaps split it up and use it in an e-mail series leading to the sale of a product.

Every time you share your expertise, you should utilize it in as many ways as possible.

This process is called duplication, and it's the key to making a lot of money, with far less work required from you.

Dani Johnson, for example, holds large “First Steps to Success” seminars a few weekends throughout the year.

She gives presentations all weekend long and records everything.

I should add that she also employs people to manage tables selling her other products – home study courses, yearly memberships to her website, and so on – during the event.

But that is a whole other topic that we will be addressing in my {ExpertPreneur Magazine available in the Apple newsstand.}

Once the event is over, her team (she doesn't do it herself, mind you) processes the video and audio, and then packages and sells it to those who could not attend.

She also takes very specific topical recordings and includes them with other products that her company offers.

Thus getting paid many times over for just one weekend of work.

Do you see how effective and lucrative duplicating your efforts can be?

Taking the Right Steps

I'm sure after reading all of this, you have many ideas running through your head raring to go.

But the best course of action would be to think of one thing you can change today that can make your expert business work for you, instead of the other way around.

Whether it be outsourcing your website creation to an expert in that field, doing a group coaching call and recording it for future use, or even exploring a new marketing method…

Really sit down and think about ways that you can improve your operations.

(And, if you want to explore another avenue of marketing that requires little to no effort on your part, be sure to check out my Affiliate Marketing 101 article in {next month’s ExpertPreneur Magazine} as well.)

You started down this road to create a better life for yourself and your family…

Work smarter, not harder, and you will soon understand how wonderful this life can be.

And you will start having fun running your business.
